Franchise Tax Board's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteer sites provides assistance to taxpayers regardless of age. You will be able to search for the addresses of sites where IRS and FTB trained volunteers prepare basic personal income tax returns for low to moderate income taxpayers free of charge.

greyarrow: Services Available to all Taxpayers
The California State Controller, John Chiang, recently contacted me wanting to partner with my office in order to educate the public on a few programs that may be of assistance to individuals and families in my district. These programs and services often go untapped due simply to a lack of awareness. The following is a partial list of programs and services:

    1) The Property Tax Postponement (PTP) program provides tax relief to low-income, blind, elderly, and disabled homeowners. The PTP program allows qualified homeowners to postpone payment of all or part of their property taxes.
    2) The Homeowner and Renter Assistance Program (HRA) provides property tax assistance grants to seniors, disabled, and low-income homeowners and renters.
    3) The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly program provides free tax help during the tax-filing season with more than 1,800 centers statewide.
    4) The Gas Tax Refund Program provides tax refunds to farmers, businesses and individuals who pay a tax for gasoline exported or used for certain off-highway purposes.
    5) The Unclaimed Property Program holds Californians' lost, forgotten, or abandoned property until claimed by the rightful owner. With sweeping reforms enacted this year, many more Californians will be reunited with their lost property.
    6) Seminars for small businesses, non-profit organizations, religious organizations, domestic partners, and women. Experts from the relevant state agencies and the private sector provide information on a variety of useful topics.
